Move Well Eat Well - Garden Pack Giveaway

As part of the School Health Nurse Programme, school nurses regularly promote the Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Move Well Eat Well initiative’s healthy eating messages.

This term Move Well Eat Well is running a ‘VEG IT UP’ incentive, promoting children to eat more vegetables and encouraging teachers to think of ways they can include more vegetables during the school day.

The daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetables is 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables.

There are Garden Packs available to give away to the first 30 Move Well Eat Well member schools who explain the interesting ways they promote more vegetables at school, submissions can be sent to movewelleatwell@dhhs.tas.gov.au. The Garden Packs consist of garden tools, seed packets, a watering can, gloves and the ‘Healthy Food Fast’ cook book.

Some of the great ideas schools have come up with are ‘Funny Face’ vegetable activities, different vegetable juices, lunchbox surveys with graphs for classroom discussion, reward systems, ‘Tend & Taste’ vegetables and one school has even cooked vegetables from their school garden in a solar oven!

For more information on the Move Well Eat Well programme for schools go to www.movewelleatwell.tas.gov.au . There is also a ‘Families’ page for parents.
