Students from the Jordan River Senior School, Bridgewater Trade Training Centre, New Norfolk High School and Oatlands District High School celebrated the start of National Youth Week today with events highlighting the message YOLO (You Only Live Once) – Don’t Risk It!

Jordan River Senior School Principal, Robyn Storey, said the Department of Education, Bridgewater Police and Community Youth Club, and Alcohol and Drug Service received a $2,000 grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet to host the Youth Week event about positive risk taking and harm minimisation.

“National Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in Australia with thousands of young people aged 12-25 getting involved each year,” Ms Storey said.

“It’s a great opportunity for the local community to recognise the contribution that our young people make and to celebrate everything that they bring to Tasmania.”

Ms Storey said today’s event is about encouraging young people to express their ideas and views on risk taking, and find out more about how they can keep themselves and their friends safe.

“I congratulate the organisers who have put this together and are so pleased to be hosting this event to further strengthen the high levels of support for young people and significant social cohesion within the local community.”

The carnival-style celebrations at Jordan River Senior School include:

·        motivational speech and event opening by young entrepreneur and inspirational founder of
         BRAAP motorbikes, Brad Smith

·        Red Herring skateboarding presentation

·        “beer goggle” obstacle course

·        healthy food, including a smoothie bay, fruit kebabs, popcorn and healthy burgers
